For years vegetable growing has been associated with Dalat. Dr. Nguyen Ba Hung is a key player in developing Dalat’s vegetable industry. After completing his PhD studies in plant genetics in France he returned to Vietnam ready to apply what he had learned. In 2006 Organik developed its current production, processing and teaching centre. The farm focused on products like baby beetroot, carrots, squash and lettuces as well as a wide complement of herbs. In the past few years production has also focused on the production of “fresh cut” products such as arugula, micro mix, baby spinach and Mesclun. Early in 2014 Control Union of the Netherlands issued Organic Certification to the farm. In late 2007 a modern processing centre was built on the farm property. This facility was organized into a chain so that various stages in the process could be separated from each other and sanitary conditions could be maintained. For example, the processing of fresh cut products is done in a completely isolated area of the facility. This enables these products to be marketed as “fresh cut & ready to eat”. Organik’s cold storage facility enable Organik to maintain the freshness of its products until they are ready for shipment. This processing facility has been issued a HACCP Certificate by Control Union. ORGANIK is responding to an increasing demand for high value, organic and conventional vegetables. It tries hard to be a responsible member of the community by training local farmers and students in good growing practices. A regular stream of visitors, foreign as well as Vietnamese visits the farm to learn about and admire an example of sustainable agriculture without potentially threatening inputs.
